Clan Clan ?? - No, No

People ask very silly questions, questions that hold little relevance to me, but seem to be high on the priority in their conversation. Like - So what is your "native”?

Native?
The first time I heard that perhaps 5 years ago, I was flummoxed and had "no clue". Having always lived in the multi cultural, multi ethnic (no origin? / confused?) city of Bombay, I had never been asked what is my "native" before.
Who cared?

I asked someone what native means. I though it was as simple as being 'Indian'.
But then people posing that question knew that I was Indian. So why ask?
My friend elaborated that they meant origins. Bombay I said. No, he explained - What they mean is ethnic or ancestral origins, language.
Why? Uh, so that they get a grasp of my culture/background/tastes...
Haan??? He could explain no further.

Culture? Am not sure. I knew nothing about culture or Indian art. And I had nothing against it either. Umm err – I liked all the fests and enjoy diwali and Xmas the most. Never managed a kite or a cart, but can drive and cycle well. And I prayed to all Gods, but know none too well. And I like many cuisines and would like to go to Belgium, not Belgaum.

I can't speak my mother tongue. Will Hindi suffice?
Bombayites in similar situations, empathize here.

Today, it's even better.
- I know world news and politics, but have no clue who rules locally.
- Everything is 'new and improved'; cheese with dosas, idli manchurian and pasta is with garam masala. Rangoli had warli tribals doing dandiya on diwali. And we gifted chocolates, not mithaai.

And I don't fit any stereo types, neither of my creed, nor my star sign and not my country.
Just like my school motto, "Je Choisis tout"...

And for those who yet like to 'clan clan' and have 'native' questions, sorry - does not work like that any more.
